If your business is not showing on Google Maps in the UK, you are invisible to the customers who need you most. People searching for a local electrician or any other tradesperson on their phone are using Maps to find someone nearby. If your listing does not appear, those jobs go straight to your competitors.
This guide covers the six most common reasons your business might be missing from Google Maps — not just from the map pack at the top of search results, but from Maps altogether. We are talking about searching directly in the Google Maps app or maps.google.co.uk and finding nothing.
If your specific problem is not appearing in the top three results in Google Search, our guide on why your GBP is not showing in the map pack covers that in detail. This article deals with the broader problem of being completely absent from Maps.

1. Your profile is not verified
This is the most common reason a business does not appear on Google Maps, and it is the easiest to fix. Google will not display unverified business profiles in search results or on Maps.
To check your verification status, sign into business.google.com and look at your profile. If you see a banner asking you to verify, that is your answer.
Google offers several verification methods for UK businesses:
- Postcard verification. Google sends a postcard with a code to your business address. This takes five to fourteen days.
- Phone verification. Available for some businesses. You receive an automated call or text with a code.
- Video verification. Google may ask you to record a short video showing your business location and signage.
Complete whichever method Google offers and your listing should appear on Maps within a few days of verification.
Most verified profiles show on Maps within three days.
An unverified listing is essentially invisible on Google Maps.
2. Your profile has been suspended
A suspended profile is completely removed from Google Maps. You will not see it in any search, whether on Maps, in the app, or through Google Search.
Sign into your dashboard and check for a red suspension banner. If you see one, follow our step-by-step GBP suspension guide to appeal and get reinstated.
Common suspension triggers for tradespeople include keyword-stuffed business names, incorrect addresses, and duplicate listings. The good news is that most legitimate businesses get reinstated within a week of submitting a proper appeal.
3. Your categories are wrong or missing
Google uses your business categories to decide which searches trigger your listing. If your categories are wrong, incomplete, or too broad, Maps will not show your profile for the searches that matter.
Your primary category is the most important ranking factor you directly control. It needs to be as specific as possible. For example:
- Choose "Electrician" rather than "Contractor"
- Choose "Plumber" rather than "Home service company"
- Choose "Roofer" rather than "Building materials supplier"
Check and update your categories in the Google Business Profile dashboard under "Edit profile." Our detailed guide on choosing the right GBP categories walks through best practices for every trade.
Add relevant secondary categories too. An electrician might add "Lighting contractor" and "Electrical inspection service" as secondary categories. These broaden the searches where your listing can appear without diluting your primary category.
4. Your address or service area is set up incorrectly
If you are a service-area business — which most UK tradespeople are — your setup needs careful attention. There are two types of Google Business Profiles:
Storefront businesses display their address and appear on Maps at that exact location. Shops, showrooms, and offices with walk-in customers should use this.
Service-area businesses hide their street address and instead define the areas they serve. Plumbers, electricians, roofers, and most tradespeople who travel to customers should use this setup.
The problem arises when your service area does not include the locations people are searching from. If you have set your service area to "Cardiff" but someone in Barry searches for an electrician, you might not appear.
Review your service areas in the dashboard. You can add towns, cities, counties, or postcodes. Be generous but realistic — Google allows up to 20 service areas, and you should use enough to cover your actual working radius.
A related issue: if you have recently moved or changed your address and Maps still shows the old one, that can cause your listing to disappear from searches in your actual area. Our guide on fixing a wrong address on Google Maps covers how to sort that out.
5. Your listing has been marked as permanently closed or removed
Sometimes Google marks a business as "permanently closed" based on user reports, third-party data, or inactivity. This effectively removes you from Maps results.
Check your profile dashboard for any status warnings. If your business shows as closed:
- Open your profile editor and set the status to "Open"
- Confirm your opening hours are current
- Make sure your phone number and website are correct and active
If Google keeps reverting the status, someone may be repeatedly reporting your business as closed. This can happen with competitor interference. In that case, contact Google support directly through the dashboard.
Profile inactivity can also cause problems. If you have not logged into your Google Business Profile for months, Google may assume the business has closed. Log in at least monthly, respond to reviews, and post updates to signal that your business is active.
6. Google is suppressing your listing for guideline violations
Even if your profile is not formally suspended, Google may reduce its visibility for guideline issues that do not quite trigger a full suspension. This is sometimes called a "soft suspension" or "soft penalty."
Signs of suppression include:
- Your listing appears if you search your exact business name but not for category searches like "electrician near me"
- Your profile views and impressions have dropped suddenly without any obvious reason
- Your listing appears much lower than it used to for the same searches
Common causes include inconsistent business information across the web, photos that violate Google's content policies, or a website that Google considers spammy.
The fix is to audit your entire online presence. Check that your business name, address, and phone number are identical on every directory, review site, and social media profile. Remove any stock photos from your GBP and replace them with genuine photos of your work, your team, and your van.
Search for your exact business name on Google Maps. If it appears there but not for trade-related searches, the problem is ranking rather than visibility. Focus on categories, reviews, and citations.
When to check and what to do next
After making any fixes, allow 48 to 72 hours for changes to take effect on Google Maps. Do not keep making edits during this period — give Google time to process what you have already done.
If you have worked through all six causes above and your business still is not showing, the problem may be more nuanced. It could be a combination of factors, a data quality issue, or something specific to your trade and location.
